It has been said that you can’t have too many plants in your pond, but you can have too many fish. While there is some truth to that, the reality is that balancing the quantity of both fish and plant life has proven to be an important part of how to keep your pond looking great all year.
We carry a large selection of aquatic plants, starting in the spring and continuing through the fall.
The price range is from $3 to $80
Floating plants such as Hyacinth and Rosette Lettuce are great for clearing up algae problems. Larger koi will eat the roots, so it’s best to put them in Biofalls, streams, or even on a Floating Flora Island.
Shallow-water plants do best when placed on a shelf about 6–8″ below the water surface. After purchasing, transplant into a fabric pot to allow water to reach the roots while also preventing soil erosion into the pond water. Add a medium amount of gravel to the top and sides to keep the plant weighted down.
We also carry “Lily-Like Plants” such as Water Poppy, Clover, Mosaic, Sensitive, and the Japanese Lily. These are best placed on a shelf about 12–18″ below the surface of the water. Some of these will come pre-potted in fabric pots; others will need to be repotted.
Tropical and hardy lilies are a great addition to any aquatic garden because of their interesting leaves and stunning blooms. They are beneficial to an “Eco Pond” because they provide plenty of shade and are very helpful to the natural nitrate cycle of pond life.
Lotuses, whether in a pond or a pot, make a statement in any garden. Lotus can be potted in water that is up to 24″ deep, but they prefer shallow water where the roots are just below water level because of the temperature.
